2018 Year of the Dog

Year of the Dog

According to the Chinese Zodiac and Lunar Calendar, on February 16, 2018 (Chinese calendar year 4722) we entered the Year of the Earth Dog. The two sides to every animal on the zodiac give us pros and cons and a positive or negative way to focus the influence of the year.

The Dog symbolizes intelligence, loyalty, honesty, protection, and a healthy respect for just hanging around.  The Dog's unbending certainty in his own sense of justice causes major controversial issues to be voiced, resulting in unconventional changes.

The Dog's irrational fears, nagging anxieties, resoluteness and intensity can create stress around him. His unpretentious goading can create snarling clashes, upheavals, rebellions and much barking in the form of public protests.

The Dog will worry away at the potential effects of global warming; blockage of trade; neglect, or threat of poorer nations; tighter border-control issues and possible epidemics, as he believes that fighting injustices and looking out for the less fortunate (or protecting his pack) are a necessary part of the chase for betterment. Politicians need to be mindful of the consequences of their views on such issues.

The Dog's "march in and take control" approach, combined with a focused intent on keeping peace, inspires confidence in others to strive for stability. The faithful companion's dutiful watchfulness for possible threats will assure pointed ferocious attention towards protection.

During this year, one benefits from minimizing one's focus on money and status in favor of worthy, charitable acts or crusades against tyranny and oppression. The Dog's unselfishness will predispose us to being big-hearted and to act in good faith.

This is a year for change and new beginnings. It is a good time to start a business or change your lifestyle.  It’s a year to take a new look at health, education, and social well-being.  Construction, mining, agriculture, and real estate industries will do well, as will renewable energy sources, particularly water purification and solar related utilities. The junkyard Dog, however, can also block your passage or progress if he sees fit, so pay attention to territorial obstacles.

This will also be a year of constant erratic complexities and barking up trees: happiness and dissent, pleasantness and disharmony, largesse (the dog can be a real glutton), and good sense will all be found in the same dog house.

People born in the Year of the Dog (1910, 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018) are known to be excellent judges or lawyers, teachers, counselors, priests or missionaries.

The Dog's disinterest in money and status (although he always appears to have plenty of both) does not make for the best business person. Dogs can be eccentric, but good leaders or steady workers, whose intelligence and straightforward nature are seen in their preference for straight talk at all times.

Dogs are known to be stubborn and to find fault to the point of being pessimistic, but will work hard to right the wrongs as they see them. Their ability to instantly see through people helps them to preserve the workplace social fabric. Once the Dog picks up the scent of a project, he will stick to it with stubborn tenacity, pitting all his strength into finishing it victoriously before bounding off on to a new cause.

People born in the Year of the Dog can cut arguments to ribbons with their flawless logic and acid wit, but their high ideals, strong ethics and morality inspire confidence and loyalty in co-workers, who feel their contributions and efforts have been appreciated.

Dog people are known to occasionally snap and snarl in a temperamental flash of anger, but it is a rage they see as justified with no wrath intended and bearing no malice, rancor or jealousy. They will run off to recuperate alone, only to return with an abundant display of tail wagging, all forgiven and forgotten.

Although known to complain, scold, and feign indifference, Dogs are avidly concerned with the well-being of family and friends. Always to be counted on, they will do whatever necessary to help out, and are constantly sniffing out ways to make things better.

Slow to bestow trust, remaining emotionally distant at first, once they bond they make good friends and companions, forming long-lasting relationships based on faith and loyalty from which they will not stray.
